Research Fellow (m/f/d) - CO2 Valorisation & alternative/bio fuels production

EIFER Europäisches Institut für Energieforschung EDF-KIT EWIV

The European Institute for Energy Research EDF-KIT EWIV (EIFER) is looking for a

Research fellow (m/f/d)

CO2 Valorisation and alternative/bio fuels production,

who will integrate the Research Group “Local Multi-Energy Systems”

The position is based in Karlsruhe with a duration of initially 2 years, starting on 1st February 2023. The salary is based on qualifications and experiences according to TV-L (100%).

The European Institute for Energy Research was founded by EDF and the KIT in 2002 aiming at enhancing collaboration through projects applied to industrial issues and utilities’ needs. With its applied research orientation EIFER has been bridging the gap between science and industry for more than 20 years. In the context of the European energy transition, EIFER provides research-based innovative energy solutions for a sustainable future.

You will be part of the Local Multi-Energy Systems research group with around 20 researchers. The activities include research and development related to low carbon local energy solutions.

On those topics, the group provides:

  • energy systems analysis and conceptual work based on technical expertise, lab work, simulation and modelling
  • detailed technical studies on the design, operation and integration of the technologies in the energy systems
  • strategic and economic analysis

Within the research group Local Multi-Energy Systems and in interaction with the research group Low Carbon Hydrogen Systems, a specific focus is given on alternative fuels production like biofuels and CO2 based fuels (chemically produced from CO2 and H2).

What you can expect:

  • Technical and economic evaluation of bio/e-fuels conversion technologies
  • Design and evaluation of “Power-2-X” concepts and their integration in the energy system
  • Strategic and prospective analysis on biofuels and CO2 valorisation sectors
  • Technical/economic/strategic studies and analysis for EIFER’s clients (operational entities and strategic department of a utility)
  • The development of the activity and EIFER’s scientific recognition in the field of CO2 use and biofuels:
    • Answer to calls for public funded projects (Horizon Europe)
    • Develop EIFER’s partnerships (industrial and academic) in this domain
    • Publish results in scientific journals and conferences

What we offer:

  • An international and multi-disciplinary environment with a pleasant and open working atmosphere
  • Autonomy in organizing own work and cross-team project work
  • Flexible working conditions with possibility of part-time mobile office
  • Scientific results to be published in international journals and presented on conferences and direct discussion with industrial clients

What we expect:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in a domain related/close to the topic: chemistry, process engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering
  • 2+ years professional experience in the field of hydrogen/biomass/e-fuels is required
  • Rigor and respect of the requirements of quality/cost/deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly in a structured way and to convey clear and efficient messages orally and in written form
  • Service-oriented approach
