EIFER (European Institute for Energy Research) was established in 2001 as collaboration between Karlsruhe University (now Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT) and Electricité de France (EDF). It is located near the centre of Karlsruhe in the Technology Park of the city. The institute gathers about 110 researchers from numerous countries and offers a comfortable working environment equipped with advanced research facilities.

In collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT and the Fraunhofer Institute ICT in Pfinztal-Berghausen (about 10 km from Karlsruhe), EIFER has equipped several laboratories dedicated to research on high temperature fuel cell (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell SOFC and Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cell PCFC) and high temperature electrolysis (Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell SOEC and Protonic Ceramic Electrolysis Cell PCEC). EIFER is currently contributing to a number of national (German and French) and European projects in this area through various research activities such as powder synthesis, cell elaboration and electrochemical characterizations (cell, SRU and stack level).

The assigned tasks involve:
  • Powder synthesis (solid state route, humid routes)
  • Cell manufacture (wet chemical routes)
  • Maintenance and organization of the laboratory
  • Operating and maintenance of test setups dedicated to ceramic-based cell technologies
  • Close monitoring of the status of the test setup, identification and removal of possible component failures
  • Collection, processing and analysis of experimental data with respect to performance, degradation and failure incidents
  • Activity reporting
  • Ability to work in autonomy and to organize own work with minimal supervision
  • Discipline and regard for confidentiality, security and safety at all times

Required qualifications are:
  • Bachelor or equivalent university degree in Chemistry
  • Language skills: fluent English and German
  • Strong focus on experimental work
  • Ability to collaborate in a team
  • Interest in acquiring new skills and developing new know-how
  • Integration in an international working environment

The following skills and experiences would be of advantage:
  • Experience with LabVIEW, DaisyLab
  • Knowledge in physics, electrochemistry, chemical process engineering, solid state chemistry
  • Experience with electrochemical characterization using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
  • Knowledge of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and Electrolysis technology
  • Knowledge of French language

The position is foreseen to be filled as soon as possible and is for a fixed term of 2 years. The salary is based on qualification and experience according to TV-L (100%).
