Aviation Associate Researcher

International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT)


The ICCT seeks a highly motivated and committed full-time Associate Researcher who will work primarily to help develop policies to promote zero emission aircraft in Europe. The researcher will contribute to technical assessments of hydrogen and battery electric aircraft, and help policymakers craft policies to support those aircraft, including under the EU’s Emission Trading System (EU ETS). The staff will also work directly with ICCT’s Aviation Director to represent the ICCT in European national and regional policymaking related to aviation emissions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Contribute to new research on emerging zero emission aircraft, notably hydrogen and electric aircraft;
  • Work with EU national and regional policymakers to develop and refine policies to support zero emission aviation, including the EU ETS;
  • Synthesize technical information into policy-relevant documents and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Engage with external stakeholders including government officials, NGOs, academics, and industry to build trust and partnerships as the ICCT’s Aviation Team representative in Europe;
  • Organize workshops, meetings, and other outreach activities;
  • Support other ICCT research related to EU aviation and provide additional support as requested by members of the Aviation team.


  • Master’s degree in engineering, environmental science, environmental policy, energy and resources, or a transportation-related field or other relevant subject; or a Bachelor’s degree plus two to three years of related experience;
  • Good working understanding of aerospace, aeronautical, or transportation engineering, aviation policy, and/or air quality issues;
  • Proficiency with analytical modeling is required; experience with Python, Matlab, or R is preferred;
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills, plus good interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical, and research skills combined with strategic problem-solving and organizational skills;
  • Familiarity with efficiency technologies and emissions controls for other modes is desirable;
  • International experience is preferred.

This full-time position will be based in our Berlin office.
