Reiner Lemoine Institute is an independent non-profit research institution that contributes to a transformation towards a sustainable energy supply based on 100 % renewable energy. Our three research fields are Transformation of Energy Systems, Mobility with Renewable Energy, and Off-Grid Systems. We conduct applied research to scientifically support the long-term transition of the energy supply system towards renewable energy.

We are offering a position as student assistant in the Research Field Transformation of Energy Systems to be filled at the earliest opportunity in the following Project:

Modeling and analysis of the integration of new photovoltaic technologies into local and European energy systems in comparison with the state-of-the-art technology

The position is to be filled for a period of 12 months.

The research project GRECO implements Open Science and other approaches of "Responsible Research and In-novation" (RRI) in a real research project in the field of photovoltaics. It aims to improve the integration of photo-voltaics (PV) into energy systems by developing three innovative PV technologies and analyzing their integration into energy systems: Concentrator photovoltaics (CPV), thin-film photovoltaics and PV-powered heat pump systems.

We are looking for support in the analysis of these new technologies concerning their integration into energy systems, with a focus on CPV. This includes, among other things, a comparison of CPV with modern silicon modules in terms of their power production profiles for different periods and locations. In order to analyze the potential of CPV for the development of "Net Zero Energy Buildings", it is our goal to develop a model with the Open Energy Modelling Framework "oemof" for answering different research questions during the project.

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program – ideally (energy) engineering, physics, or a related field of study
  • Programming skills are required – ideally in Python
  • Candidates should ideally be fluent in English and German – at least C1 level in one of these languages is required
  • Previous experience in modeling energy systems is an advantage
The candidate is expected to work independently, systematically, and thoroughly with minimal supervision. He/she should be able to communicate and document research results on his/her own.
