For our Institute of Solar Research in
Jülich, we are currently looking for a
Physicist, Engineer, Data Scientist or similar (f/m/x) Condition
Monitoring of Heliostat Fields Using Artificial Intelligence
Your mission:
You want to contribute to a sustainable future with storable

looking for a motivated physicist/engineer/data scientist (or
similar) for a PhD thesis to develop a condition monitoring
system for heliostat fields using artificial intelligence. Look

The Institute of Solar Research is one of the leading research
facilities in the field of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) and,
with its Solar Tower and the Heliostat Testing Platform in
Jülich, owns a unique research and testing infrastructure in
Germany. Heliostats – as part of the CSP systems – are mirrors
following the sun to concentrate solar light over 1000 times on
the top of a tower to achieve high temperatures for the
production of electricity, solar fuels or process heat.
During your PhD time, you will work on the following tasks:
- You do literature research and familiarize yourself with the
topics CSP, heliostats and condition monitoring.
- You develop a concept of a condition monitor system using
existing sensor data from a single heliostat.
- You further develop the continuous condition monitoring
system on site of the solar tower Jülich by applying appropriate
methods of signal processing and data driven modeling.
- You validate and critically evaluate the performance of the
methodology.
- You document and publish your scientific results in articles
and at international conferences.
Besides flexible work hours (within core time) and the
possibility to do home office, we also offer the opportunity to
participate in the DLR Graduate Program where you can attend
various seminars for continuous education and advanced training
possibilities.
Your qualifications:
- You have a very good completed scientific university degree
in engineering, physics, computer science or in a comparable
field.
- You are interested in CSP technologies, love to identify
current issues and create solutions.
- You have a passion for innovative research and a scientific
and systematic way of working.
- You can work independently and on your own responsibility but
also enjoy working in an international team, on both experiments
and simulations.
- Your good English skills help you with publications and
communication in an international environment.
- Ideally, you have good programming skills and are interested
in the topic of machine learning.
