Research project emplement!: Empowering Urban Regions for Implementation of Sustainability and Resilience Strategies Considering the Urban-Rural Nexus applying the example of Da Nang City and Quang Nam Province, Vietnam

IZES gGmbH (www.izes.de) is an affiliated institute of the Saarland University of Applied Sciences, located in Saarbrücken and Berlin. As a research institute, we develop innovative solutions to promote sustainable development and climate and resource protection on a national and international level. The department Infrastructure & Municipal Development, under whose leadership the thesis is to be written focuses on research questions related to efficient supply and disposal infrastructure as well as to sustainable development of the built environment in the context of social, demographic, economic and climatic change processes.

The BMBF-funded research project emplement! deals with the development of transferable implementation tools that enable stakeholders in the target area of Da Nang City and the neighbouring Quang Nam Province to implement sustainability and resilience strategies into practical and synergistic measures. One aspect of the project is the implementation of five sustainable pilot projects in the fields of action tourism, agriculture/ forestry, industry and built environment. For the analysis and evaluation of the pilot projects different approaches will be used within the project.

The master thesis deals with the development of a methodology approach for the assessment of the technical and economic performance of pilot plants, taking into account sustainability aspects and regional framework conditions.

This includes the following tasks and research questions:

  • Research on existing approaches for technical and economic evaluation
  • Conducting interviews with relevant Vietnamese stakeholders and experts
  • Development of a methodology approach for the assessment of the technical and economic performance for pilot plants, taking into account sustainability aspects and regional framework conditions
  • Application of the developed methodology for selected projects in Vietnam (Research on existing projects, data collection etc.)

The thesis includes a research stay of about three months in central Vietnam. In the remaining time you will be located at our office in Saarbrücken, Germany or in Home office. In total six months will be required to complete the described tasks.

You should have very good English and MS Office skills as well as an independent and dedicated way of working. We are looking for master students with a technical and economic background ideally with reference to sustainability, material flow management, renewable energies or related subjects.

IZES gGmbH offers an attractive work environment and intensive support for students.
